SUTD’s top management set clear directions on what was expected of the Library and the vital role it will play in supporting SUTD’s unique pedagogy and cohort based learning strategy. The Library, was not to be just another Library, but designed to support the teaching, research and learning needs of the university with open access for all. Hence, a lot of thought was given to planning and designing the Library to match the lofty vision that was set to shape the directions of the University. The views of SUTD Management, Staff and Faculty were sought. In addition, two pioneer students on SUTD’s |
unique campus builder programme, Amos Chia and Jessie Tang, played an active role in gathering feedback from fellow campus builders and formulating the Library’s vision and design. Extensive research of paradigm shifts in libraries and information industry worldwide was also carried out. |

As we formulated the strategies of the unique role the Library can play in this new cohort-based learning environment, it became eminent that the Library must embody and reflect the University’s directions. The focus became clear – the library must stimulate design thinking; it must be designed to attract and inspire its users and anyone using the Library must walk away inspired to design. Hence, the birth of our vision “Designed to Inspire, Inspired to Design”. |

The vision shaped the Library’s operating philosophy and strategy. The Library will involve its users in all aspects of its development and growth. For instance, Faculty members from the Architecture and Sustainable Design (ASD) pillar provided useful inputs and advise on the unique Library design and shelving, All Faculty members contributed to the “go digital” collection development strategy where we will adopt a “go digital” strategy as well as in suggesting innovative approaches and solutions that will promote access and use of information. This includes an “honour system” to facilitate a 24x7 library service. |

Though the Library may be seen as a small space, we have adopted an inside out and outside in approach to not just expand the space but to tap resources from within and outside to ensure our users have an enriching experience and the opportunity to use all your senses in your journey of learning and discovery. There will be quiet corners for reflection and learning as well as spaces to encourage discussion and sharing. In line with the cohort based learning and pedagogy, the Library will promote a more interactive learning and discovery experience. Latest technology will be |
adapted to stimulate collaborate research and sharing in groups. In addition to a rich design collection, we will connect our users to leaders in the field to stimulate design thinking. These will be via exhibitions, talks, forums both at the Library and virtually. Our Information Research Specialist will be on hand to offer a personalized service to help you in your learning and discovery journey. |

The Library Team will strive to provide a high quality and responsive service. The Team will introduce our cohort to the wide range of information and knowledge resources and inculcate the right research skills. The training will ensure that each user makes use of the right information at the right time in the right way. In addition, the Library will encourage students to collaborate, share information and learn as a group and contribute to the library’s knowledge base. |
